Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren chief executive, will succeed Ron Dennis as team principal of the formula one team should the 60-year-old chairman stand down, as expected, over the next couple of weeks.

The change at the top will not affect the day-to-day operation of the team, for whom Lewis Hamilton will be chasing his first world championship when the new season starts on March 16 in Australia. Hamilton, who has known Whitmarsh personally since 1995 when he was first taken under the team's wing, will continue to work with his usual group of engineers and mechanics.
