Serie A Preview: Empoli-Juventus
This week Serie A resumes from a mini hiatus due to World Cup Qualifying. Empoli goes up against current Champions Juventus in what seems to be a David vs. Goliath match up.
Background
Empoli mark their return to Serie A after a brief spell in Serie B. The organization felt it was unfairly relegated two years ago, but they lost those precious points and were relegated. They proved them-selves in Serie B however and booked a reservation to the Serie A Hotel. Empoli has a young and talented team and have acquired Almiron and Nomvethe, but have also let go players such as Vargas and Belleri. They were active in the transfer market and have made good acquisitions and are looking towards the future. However, they lost their first Serie A game last week. Yes it was against Udinese, a strong team, but losses do not give points and if the team dos not adapt quickly to Serie A life, they face a short stay at the Serie A resort. They face a strong Juventus and when it comes to Scudetti, Juve never show mercy. Capello’s men know very well, that these are the games in which one attains the points and they will not hold back. Somma has been studying Juventus, but when one is up against Capello, you need to study and write a research paper for he has been there done that and got the T-shirt.
Juventus started their season well with a 1-0 win against Chievo. It could have been a lot more goals, but Fontana was great. Juve were on their game, but wavered towards the end, however, Chievo were rarely a threat. Juve have key injuries, but the old lady always rises to the occasion and has shown the critics that an oxygen mask and a cane is not needed. (Well they rise to the occasion in Serie A anyways, In Europe they falter. Yes for a team of this magnitude their European record is nothing to brag about). They boys know what needs to be done and they will come out to play and win. Vieira is adapting well and the team is solid. It is evident that Juventus wants the Champions League (but they say that every year), but as last year, Juve will be competitive in all fronts and will be prepared to win in Europe and at home. Juve have an easy game against Empoli and should take home the points as a loss or a tie will cause trouble down the line as Inter seems to be gelling as a team now.
Team news
Both teams have no suspension worries. Del Piero, Brindelli and Buffon are injured, as Zebina has to be evaluated. Empoli have one injury worry in Zanetti. All in all both coaches have plenty of options and need not to worry about the lack of players to field.
Players to watch
Berti (Empoli)
Can he be like Fontana and keep the score line minimal to help his team out? We will see as Juve will come to play and he better be ready for if the defence fails, he is the last line of defence. Good goaltending will go a long way to aiding Empoli to salvage a point perhaps.
Vieira (Juventus)
Played well in his first game in Serie A after nine long years. These are the games where he can show his talent and worth. Of course one can say that this is not a big game or team, but all games are important and the most important thing right now is for him to adapt to the Juve philosophy and so far he has. Games like this will help his confidence for the long haul.

Outcome
This game should hold no trouble for Juventus do expect a repeat of last week. Juve will try to score more than one goal to keep up with Inter on goal difference. If Juve draw or lose, it will be due to their complacency, but I expect Juve to come out with three points. Juve 2-0.
