To use an HDR image as a file texture
In Maya assign a Surface Shader to an object.
Map the shader's Output Color to a File Texture.
When selecting the image file to use for the File Texture, select the HDR image.
This image does not appear in file swatches, the hardware render or when rendering with the Maya Software renderer; it only works when rendering with the mental ray renderer.
Tip
If you turn on Final Gather, mental ray for Maya uses the HDR image to light your scene. See mental ray for descriptions of Irradiance and Irradiance Color to control light intensity and absorbency of an HDR image.
Note
Render HDR images only with Batch Render. You can't render HDR images with Render View. Be sure to select RGBE as the Data Type in the framebuffer node in the mental ray Render Global Settings window. For more information about the Render Global Settings window, see the Rendering guide.
