The error message itself indicates that there's some kind of weird issue with DirectX. First off, make sure you've got the acceleration turned all the way up in DXDIAG.
If that doesn't help, then try running configure.exe and unticking the 3D/hardware acceleration checkbox. You don't really need it on modern hardware for good performance anyway, and switching it off frequently does seem to help with weird problems like this."
