A gép felrobbanása egy igen jól látható esemény volt még szabad szemmel is. Az O-gyűrű hibűt persze nem azonnal látták, elemezgetni kellett sokáig, csak mivel a telemetria segített, hogy mit kell keresni, meg is találták.

While the shuttle separates from its external fuel tank shortly before reaching orbit, it does so with no engines firing and in a benign aerodynamic environment. Separating from the tank while the SRBs were firing would drive the shuttle into the bottom of the fuel tank and the SRB exhaust plumes.
