"The recent articles on the positivity around the Wii U from the media is a nice change of pace from the pieces early on in Wii U's life. Even before Nintendo got a chance to start releasing games on the Wii U, the media said it was dead. They didn't even give them a year. After all Nintendo did for this industry, somehow it became cool to rag on Nintendo. Third parties abandoned the console as the industry continued to bury Nintendo. I feel that was unfair.
Would this industry be better without Nintendo? Regardless of hardware, Nintendo creates some of the most memorable games ever. They have never done anything to suggest otherwise. Nintendo gives us worlds that we would want to go to. Most other developers create worlds that we would never want to go to.
I admit Nintendo has made so many mistakes with the Wii U especially with the hardware. It should have been as powerful as the other consoles. They always create ideas without fully thinking them through. What was the point of the gamepad screen? Was it just for off play tv support? Did it justify the increase in cost? Even the Amiibos seem like an idea that isn't fully realized. These feel like just gimmicks instead of actual reasons to own the console.
Nintendo also seems to ignore what the mass market wants. Like it or not, video games have become more than just gameplay. The biggest triple AAA titles are story-driven with movie like production values.I love that Nintendo games can stand on their own with just gameplay, but Nintendo has to evolve in order to satisfy the mass consumer. I love what Nintendo did with Kid Icarus on the 3ds.
I know that people want Nintendo to release more games on the Wii U but games have gotten so complex to make that is not feasible. I want a new f-zero, punchout, kid icarus, metroid, star fox, excitebike, waverace, earthbound, and zelda. Also where are the new IPs? Give it to me next year.
No company can make that many quality games in a year. I wish that my favorite developer, Naughty Dog, gives me 4 amazing games in a year instead of 4 amazing games in 6 years. The truth is only Nintendo can support an entire console with its output. Perhaps Nintendo has to join with other companies to increase its output per year.
I get that this a business. At this point, the Wii U will never be a sales success. However, I admire the fact that Nintendo doesn't care. The only thing they care about is the people who bought the system. Even if you completely hate the games on the Wii U, you have to admit there is something noble about what they are doing. Pikmin has never been better. Mario Kart has never been better. Donkey Kong has never been better. Smash has never been better.
Games rarely surprise me these days. However, every time I turn on my Wii U, I am surprised that Nintendo still somehow manages to charm me. I am always amazed that in a lot of threads we are arguing which games have better resolutions and post processing. Is that what this generation is about? What happened to good games?
Throughout its history Nintendo has created some of the most memorable gaming experiences ever. Is anything equal to first time you picked up Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time? Why would they stop? Yet, people are surprised when Nintendo games are well received. As long as Nintendo is around, it will continue to create fun games.
I still think that Mario Galaxy is in a completely different league than anything released in this generation even on the Wii U, but only Nintendo has the ability to top it. It's sad that we never gave them a chance."
