If you can set up a science station next to the incoming neutron star, you will be able to do the special research project. Once the project is complete, the neutron star is destroyed.
Once your station is set up, other players may destroy your station and pause your studies.
Also other players may put a station on the star to prevent other players from doing the research project (example: star is heading for enemy system, I create a science station to stall prevent the enemy from destroying the neutron star).
