I suffered from the same 801811A5 error and searched many forums. One person had found a solution for himself, which I applied and which immediately worked for me as well. Here it is - and please excuse that I have to translate from a German Windows 7 to English and likely will misrepresent a few terms:
In the "Start" menu go to "system control" and select "services". One of the services is named along the lines of "notification for system events". It seems to be set to "manual" by default. Now start this service and your Phone 7 update should work flawlessly.
Makes you wonder why a flag ship like Microsoft cannot handle such exceptions in a more elegant way, or at least issue a meaningful error message (which has never been their forte).
