Stoke City
Thomas Sorensen – 6 – Couldn’t have stopped Darren Bent’s effort, and was relatively solid aside from that before he went off with a nasty looking head wound.
Andy Griffin – 6 – Marshalled the defence well and made some vital interceptions.
Ab Faye – 6 – Made a few clumsy challenges, notably on Bent late on, but aside from that he was untroubled.
Ibrahima Sonko – 7 – Made a great block from Bent’s early effort, and nullified the threat of Pavlyuchenko when he came on.
Danny Higginbotham – 7 – Coolly taken penalty and was effective at both ends for Stoke, firing in some dangerous crosses while putting in a decent shift in defence.
Tom Soares – 8 - Won both penalties for Stoke, the first of which saw Gareth Bale dismissed, and he was a persistent threat throughout.
Seyi Olofinjana – 6 - 25-yard effort had Gomes scrambling, but was quiet otherwise.
Salif Diao – 6 – Was a physical presence in midfield, but the lack of consistency in Spurs’ own middle five reduced the work he had to do.
Rory Delap – 8 – Got his name on the scoresheet and could have a second when his follow-up effort from Ricardo Fuller’s penalty hit the crossbar.
Mamady Sidibe – 8 – Thorn in Spurs’ side throughout, and his delightful ball set up Delap for his first.
Dave Kitson – 5 – Looks short of confidence.
Substitutes
Ricardo Fuller – 7 – Was brilliant when he came on. Saw his penalty saved late on, but his impressive run and shot deserved a goal rather than the crossbar.
Ryan Shawcross – 6 – Did was asked of him.
Steve Simonsen – 5 – Will have enjoyed the run out.
Tottenham Hotspur
Heurelho Gomes – 5 – Made a couple of decent stops, but he looked shaky in the air and was caught rushing out of his goal on a couple of occasions. His kicking was awful, but he made a good save to prevent Fuller’s penalty in stoppage time.
Alan Hutton – 6 – Solid return for the full back.
Jonathon Woodgate – 6 – Gave away the second penalty. Not quite at his imperious best as Spurs struggled to contain Stoke’s counter attacks.
Vedran Corluka – 5 – Spurs fans are still to be convinced, but he went off with a nasty looking injury and hopefully it won’t prove to be anything too serious.
Gareth Bale – 4 – Had little option but to make the challenge on Soares, but he made a bed for himself in losing the ball in the first place.
Aaron Lennon – 7 – Was one of Spurs’ better performers, and he made a couple of incisive runs that led to shots on goal.
Didier Zokora – 6 – Was a solid makeshift left-back after Bale’s dismissal.
Jermaine Jenas – 5 – Was generally quite poor, and the two free-kicks he aimed goal-wards are still rising.
Luka Modric – 7 – Much-improved performance by the Croatia international, and he threatened to beat Sorensen with a number of longer range efforts.
David Bentley – 5 – Disappointing. His passing in particular was off-the-boil.
Darren Bent – 7 – Certainly more effective in a two-man attack, but took his goal well and was lively throughout.
Substitutes
Michael Dawson – 3 – Protested his innocence when sent off – perhaps because he only used one leg to strike Sidibe almost at his knee. Reckless.
Roman Pavyluchenko – 4 – No impact to note.
