    Special Projects
    From SOTS

    When a player successfully salvages a technology from an alien ship or planet or discovers an Asteroid Monitor, a new special project appears in the dropdown list on the top right of the Research Interface. By highlighting the project and clicking Start, research into the project is begun. From then until the project is completed or cancelled, each special project draws 50,000 from savings each turn. Cancelling a special project before it is completed will end the project permanently and you will not be able to start it up again at any future date. Multiple special projects can be researched at one time.

    Special projects fall into one of 10 categories. While the name of the project in each category is randomly assigned, the name is often related to the category in some way. But project names are not indicative of the actual technology being researched, only the category. The only exception to this is the Asteroid Monitor Control project, which will always state which system the Asteroid Monitor is in.

    Also note that while race specific drives cannot be salvaged or researched, power technologies, such as Pulsed Fission, Micro-Fusion Drives or Recombinant Fissionables, can show up. A technology like Ramscoops could also show up if you are playing as the Hivers.
