The salvage part of a Repair and Salvage ship has a very small chance of recovering information about new technologies after a battle. You can salvage wreckage and orphaned sections from the destruction of alien ships and you can salvage infrastructure from destroyed colonies. This requires that you be in control of the battlefield after combat.
