    "Rollout of digital television is well advanced in the European Union and original problems of interoperability are on the way to being solved," said Martin Selmayer, a spokesman for the executive arm of the European Union.

    "Compulsory technical standards imposed by regulators are not necessary for the rollout of interactive digital TV in Europe," the Commission said.
