It is unclear if this changes with the newest patch or if it applies to another parts of the game, but at the start of stage 2-1, grab all the items you find, including the machine gun and quit the game, say "yes" to both questions and reload the game, you should have the items and the machine gun which you can sell for some lousy 200 gold but you'll keep the bullets. Do this as many times as you like to get gold, ammo and herbs. Enjoy."
