LCD - Plazma

Samsung Electronics has allegedly landed an order for 40-inch panels with Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the Chinese-language Commercial Times reports.

In addition to AUO, Taiwan's No. 2 and No. 2 panel manufactures, Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO) and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. (CPT), will also become suppliers to Samsung in 2007. Samsung is expected to ship over six million LCD TVs this year, paralleling Sony and Sharp to be one of the world's largest LCD TV brands.

The Korean company recently mapped out its 2007 LCD TV shipment goal of 10 million units, compared with the forecasted global demand of about 66 million units. Samsung is expected to outsource about 40% of the needed panels (mainly 32-inch to 40-inch) from outside suppliers in 2007, because the capacity at S-LCD Corp., a joint venture between Samsung and Sony, will be insufficient to support the production volume.

South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics has placed an order with Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) for 52" LCD TVs for delivery in Q1 2007.

The deal will make Taiwanese company CMO the world's top producer of 50"-range flat panel LCD TVs. Samsung has also placed orders for 32", 40", and 42" TVs, a deal that makes the company CMO's largest client.

Next year CMO aims to deliver 16 million units to attain growth of at least 60%, according to the Economic Daily News.

Samsung and CMO have already reached an agreement on the number orders and supply, according to EDN sources. CMO president Ho Chao-yang originally hinted at the deal at the 2006 FPD International exhibition in Yokohama in mid-October, where CMO unveiled its 52" second generation LCD TV -- the first of its kind by a Taiwanese company.

Samsung's yearly sales target has been adjusted to 6 million units, positioning the company to overtake competitor Phillips for the world's top position in flat panel TVs.

Samsung Vice President Jun H. Souk said at the FPD exhibition that Samsung plans to build 8th generation plants, which will focus on 52" screens. Samsung, Sharp, and CMO are currently the only producers of 52" screens.

The global market for LCD TVs is growing by a large margin, as shipments have totaled nearly 10 million units this year, and forecasts call for 16 million units next year, according to CMO.

50% of Samsung's LCD TVs and monitoring equipment flat panels are sold abroad. Except for its S-LCD-TFT screens, most of Samsung's products are procured in Taiwan, with CMO, AUO, and Chunghwa Picture Tubes serving as the main suppliers.

És még egy csavar: a SONY sem marad ki ebből a buisness-ből:

Besides shipping 26- and 32-inch panels to Sony, AU Optronics (AUO) recently landed orders for 40-inch TV panels from the Japan-based company, with delivery to start in May, according to sources.

AU Optronics (AUO) declined to comment on partnerships it has with clients.

Although Sony and Samsung Electronics set up S-LCD with the seventh-generation (7G) LCD production at the venture already producing 40- and 46-inch panels, the quote level of the 40-inch panels is still higher than those from Taiwan-based panel makers, the sources said.

In addition, Samsung is earlier in purchasing large-size TV panels from Taiwan while its LCD TV shipment target of eleven million units for 2007 is higher than the ten million-unit target of Sony. With the rising competition, Sony has decided to give orders to AUO for 40-inch panels, the sources noted.

With the orders from Sony, along with shipment delivery of the segment to Samsung starting from the end of 2006, AUO may already be seeing profits from its 40/42-inch panels, the sources indicated.

During a recent visit to Taiwan, Katsumi Ihara, executive deputy president of Sony, said the purchase value and proportion of Taiwan LCD panels for Sony will continue to rise this year.

In related news, AUO will launch a new version of high-definition (HD) 42-inch panels with a more competitive pricing later this quarter, according to TV makers.
