"As in terms of rewriting the code, no i havent done that. That would mean an .exe change which is not intended on our end as long it doesnt come as official DEV change.
But what i did is following:
Each airframe had/has specifications like max/min speeds and altitidues and cruisespeeds in the database. Now interestingly those values in the db can be in mph OR knots (why, dont ask me). To find out if those values reflect correctly ingame (real mach speeds in certain altitidues) i checked every frame ingame comparing them to real numbers, meaning how high and fast each frame really operates (fighters, bombers, all of them) in real depending on mission and task and compared to realistic values.
They were wrong for the frames we use. Stratos-Bombers at 18kfeet, Barcaps at 25kfeet with min speeds hovering like drons with no flexibility left, ..etc etc etc... the list goes on.
In other words the AI didnt use the frames as humans would use the abilties of those frames depending on their mission of course again. That is what i changed.
Now, previously it has been tried to determine their mission behaviour in a file called mission.dat, meaning if it is a BARCAP fly "like this", if it is SWEEP "fly like this", but mission.dat can only work if the max/min values in the db are correct in the first place, which there werent. Furthermore using mission.dat makes AI fly like "dumb" scripted drones if you will. Not using a mission.dat i found out the engine is way more capable of using the AI frames more fluid, more correct and rigth aka smart including their tactics infact.
Then there were other points to be considered, such as how the AI calculates a mission as "too dangerous" and how they re-route the flightplan or abort if necessary, what kind of ranges they support or ignore, how and what kind of attack profiles they use depending on weapons used (ground), how they calculate packages and escorts (incl SEAD escort)..
Bottom line, task was to make the AI world more smart and more logic rather then scripted dumb suicidal and unlogic in order to provide a more realistic battlefield. Infact this topic required a global tactical and strategical analytics of the whole environment, but i tried to answer as brief as possible. " A.S.
