Egy weasel től ugyanerre a kérdésre...

As to your takeoff question, it depends on what you're flying, how much load it's carrying and what the weather is plus what altitude your airport is at.

In the F-16, you only used afterburner for heavyweight (combat loaded) takeoffs. If you had a clean jet (or even one with 2 "bags" (external fuel tanks) you'd overspeed the gear taking off in "AB." You couldn't get the gear retracted fast enough before the airplane would exceed the gear limit airspeed.

In the F-4 and earlier jets you could takeoff without burners IF: the load was low enough, the runway was long enough and if the density altitude was low enough. Old story about a F-100 pilot trying to log max time so he didn't use burner for a takeoff from Nellis in July. HIGH density altitude, he pulled the jet off the runway at brick last, wobbled into the air and crashed about a quarter-mile later.

I never in 6 years of flying the F-4 ever took off without using the burners. Besides, THAT thump in the back when the burners lit was so cool!
