I'd also like to confirm this. My saved games were are at 54 megabytes, and the game crashed regularly.
If I started a new game in X2, the game ran just fine...blazing fast, and no crashes at all.
When someone told me that their save games were only 24 megs, and they had been playing twice as long as I had, and had visited at least twice as many systems than I had, then I knew it was a bug with the saves.
