Der Bomber: Bring Podolski To Bayern
8/29/2005 7:41:00 PM
Legendary Bayern Munich striker Gerd Müller believes that the Bavarian club should sign Köln's Lukas Podolski to ensure the 20-year-old benefits from the expertise of Dutchman Roy Makaay.
In a weekend newspaper interview with Bild am Sonntag, Müller, perhaps the greatest goalscorer of all-time, suggested that Bayern and the German national team would benefit if the next big thing in German football was paired with Makaay - a man who has already scored six times in three Bundesliga outings this season.
The interview, held jointly with Makaay, saw Müller speculating on the repurcussions of taking the Köln star to Munich. He told the Dutcman: "You’d train him up, and then once you quit, he’ll be the finished product."
Müller, known worldwide as "Der Bomber", also believes his 33-year Bundesliga scoring record will be broken by the prolific Makaay this season. With the former Deportivo La Coruna frontman netting six times already, the man who top-scored at the 1970 World Cup said: "I honestly believe he’ll get more than that this term." Muller scored 40 times for Bayern in the 1973 season.
Makaay, for his part, was less certain, telling Bild: "There’s no way I’ll be able to keep it up. There will come a period where I don’t score." The Dutchman has scored 45 times in his first two Bundesliga seasons. Müller rates only Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Adriano as the equal of Makaay, saying: "There are maybe three or four equally good finishers in the whole world."
Kaiserslautern's Halil Altintop has also scored six goals in three Bundesliga matches this season. Podolski got off the mark against Altintop's side on Saturday.
