We have used special moves with only mixed success in Fifa 2004, but we have found that they have a useful application in drawing fouls. There isn't a "take dive" button in Fifa, but you can manipulate the refs a bit with your special move button. You will often draw the foul 10-20 yards outside of the penalty box, putting you in a solid position for a set play on the net.
In this example, #20 is moving at good pace down the field, but his defender is closing on him quickly.
We use our special move button and right analog stick to pull the ball back. This baits the defender who gets just a bit too aggressive.
The defender goes for an out of control slide tackle, taking down our man and committing the foul. We know have the opportunity to pull a set play out and attack the goal. You won't always get the foul called. At times you will simply be dispossessed, but the odds are pretty good that you'll get a free kick. Not a strategy that you want to use on your own side of the pitch, but in a tight game, it might give you the break you need to put one in the net.
