- Small 16-bit Pre-emptive Multitasking Microkernel.
- Dynamically linked Shared Libraries.
- Applications can be written in C, with the LCC cross compiler.
- Extremely scalable: all drivers are programs, which can be loaded and unloaded at run-time.
Powerful commandline shell, and support for virtual consoles.
- A nice portion of the standard C library has been written for JOS, so some applications can be ported/compiled from other platforms.
- TCP/IP networking with PPP and SLIP. (!!!!!)
- A very flexible GUI.
- A tiny Web Server, and a few other internet applications.
- A nice text-mode text editor.
- A C-like scripting language called AnScript. (CGI Guestbook script written in it).
- A graphical IRC client (and text based one).

- JOS contains about 70,000 lines of code written in C and 65816 assembler.
