This issue is even more insidious than annoying and unnecessary prompts.
If you open a material library, and chose a Max file instead of a material lib file, and you happen to click yes to the “save the modified material library” prompt, the Max file you chose to load as a material library WILL GET HAMMERED, and WILL BE COMPLETELY CORRUPTED. GONE, POOF!
Fortunately I had a backup of an extremely critical file that got clobbered, even though I hadn’t discovered this behavior until almost a month later.
This is easily reproducible:
1. Create a teapot and a material for it, save max file.
2. New max file, open material editor, get material library, open library, select Max file from step one, select material.
3. Edit material, close max, say yes to save material library changes.
4. Attempt to open max file from step 1.
5. Whoosh...KABOOM!
