Nvidia where they use wider buses to fully support more memory i.e. 8800GTX with 384bit bus that can address a full 768kb of memory, or 280 with a 512 bit bus that can address a full 1gb ATI still is using a less expensive 256 bit bus on the 4000 series cards. So your 1mb card really can only address 512kb. They doubled the memory and used it along with some addressing scheme that allows them to improve throughput but the 4000's can still only address 512 at a time which nullifies the argument about more memory for larger textures.
