The story has, by now, been imitated endlessly. There are four people on a haunted house to investigate it. The story is told in the most perfect classic form. From beginning to end, you follow the story in the most careful pace. From the prologue to the conclusion, the story is peerlessly told. Robert Wise sets up a classic haunted-house film. There is no blood and gore, no creatures or monsters in plain sight, there is very little physical presence in this movie that should evoke such a fear reaction. True, there are multiple angle exterior shots of the mansion that make one feel as if the house is watching them all the time. And there are loud unexplained noises, bulging wall panels, and door knobs that turn by themselves. This is one of those great films where the tension is constructed upon the things you hear, upon the things you know there are. Honestly, I didn’t fear, since there were many people in the room, but I think if I would be alone in the dark, maybe I would not be able to watch the full movie.
We have the little bit stereotyped performers again. I mean it is stereotyped now, but when the film was created it was new. Julie Harris is the troubled, always-screaming woman haunted by inner ghosts, Claire Bloom is the perfect icy clairvoyant (okay, maybe she is not stereotyped), Richard Johnson is the Doctor who must keep control of the experiment and there is Russ Tamblyn, the non-believer who is in just for the adventure. Where this movie fails a little bit is in the casting of Julie Harris as Eleanor Vance. Her performance is the only weak point here: she's much too shrill, even when in repose. It is very annoying that she always screaming even if there nothing scary.
The Haunting is also keen in its images: black and white make way to light and dark and smothering shadows.
I liked this movie, I’m sure I’ll watch it again alone with a tremulous girl and watch her reaction.
