The DCU Just Took 2023's Batman Insults Too Far (& Made The Reboot Even Harder)

"James Gunn is the right man to handle the DCU reboot. His own The Suicide Squad spin-off, Peacemaker took a shot at Ben Affleck's Batman, calling him a "p*ssy" for failing to kill people and questioning why he repeatedly let archnemesis the Joker escape to wreak more havoc on Gotham. He might have had a point, but it's a weird choice for meta-jokes to target arguably the most beloved superhero movie character of all time. And now Blue Beetle is getting in on the same action."

"Blue Beetle isn't even the first 2023 movie to insult Batman. Andy Muschietti's The Flash included a scene in which Ben Affleck's Dark Knight is unwittingly roped into admitting some inconvenient truths about himself thanks to Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth. The Flash's Batman insult amounts to Bruce Wayne admitting that instead of fighting crime, he's wealthy enough to fight the causes of crime by erradicating Gotham City's poverty. That insult doesn't really hold any water, given Batman's Rogues Gallery is not made-up of rebellious freedom fighters looking to take down Gotham's elite class. Like Blue Beetle's double-barrelled Batman insults, it just feels unnecessary for a cheap leaugh."

"Even worse, in the case of Blue Beetle, James Gunn has promised that Jaime Reyes will continue as a DCU hero even after the reboot, so the idea of Bruce Wayne as an Elon Musk-like figure continues over too. Yes, Uncle Rudy's criticism of Batman as a fascist fits his anarchic, anti-authoritarian spirit, but the fact that he views other superheroes (including Ted Kord's earlier Blue Beetle) as cool is somewhat contradictory. Fans do not want to be told Batman is a fascist, and it's up to Batman: The Brave & The Bold to prove otherwise."
