MIA 5 September, 1943 at Kotelwa-Senkow, near Markor S.U. reportedly shot down mistakenly by a Hungarian fighter pilot. Channel pilot. One of Barkhorn's tutors. Shot down twice many miles behind enemy lines in Wk# 5541 & 14556, he successfully returned to duty. 700 combat missions, all victories probably in Russia.

Em 05.09.1943 Heinz Schmidt decolou para mais uma missão. Seus colegas talvez não tenham estranhado o fato de, mais uma vez, ele não ter retornado para sua base. Contudo, desta vez, sua sorte parecia ter se esgotado e ele nunca mais foi visto novamente. Acredita-se que o seu Bf 109G6 (o "amarelo 7", werkenumber 15903) tenha sido abatido por engano por caças romenos - que lutavam ao lado dos alemães na Rússia.
