After a long wait, we finally had some time with the multiplayer part of Battlefield 3 earlier today. The map showcased was Operation Metro, which was set in Paris and offered urban combat and some tense action in a subway. We tried out most of the classes and tried as many things as possible. Here are our first impressions of the game:

The game looks fantastic. Runs smooth, the lighting and details, the shadows are spectacular, whether indoor or outside. We dunno what hardware it was running on, but BF3 is absolutely gorgeous.
After you die, a screen pops up that shows the custom dog tag and rank of the enemy that killed you — great little detail.
Teams were USMC and Russians.
Prone is back, it feels like it takes a second or so to go prone. Not too fast, not too slow, just right.
The map offered a lot of variety: you can enter lots of buildings, go up to the second floor, camp etc. We already saw a few campers who loved the new buildings.
Destruction is extensive and a lot more detailed. Even shooting a wall looks amazing in BF3.
Weapons feel and sound like Bad Company 2 (on first impression), meaning they feel and sound fantastic.
Player animations are far better than Bad Company 2 and other Battlefield games. Very fluid and lifelike, almost as if you are watching someone run in real life.
The scoreboard looks a lot simpler than in Bad Company 2. We dunno if it was finalized or just alpha.
We had a few awards pop up during the game (ribbons) which looked a lot like those in BF2.
No commo rose. It wasn’t bound to the “Q” button. We looked, couldn’t find it anywhere.
You can op-out of being revived.
There is a health bar, but regenerative health is back.
You can select fire mode (e.g. single shot, full auto etc.)
4 players per squad, squad leader is indicated by a star. Squads work pretty much like in Bad Company 2, and you still get squad point bonuses.
In support, you can use an M4 with a flashlight.
You can mount LMGs on the ground and on most surfaces, but the gun can only pan approximately 90 degrees to left and right, which feels realistic.

Overall, we were impressed by what we saw. The game felt very solid and polished, despite being in “alpha” stage. We’ll upload some photos of the Battlefield 3 booth later today when we get back to the hotel, and we’ll try to get some interviews with DICE tomorrow.

Wall of text de jól hangzik -.-

Let me begin this write up by throwing a metaphor at you. I’ve been hyping Battlefield 3 for months. I have not played it and have only seen what the engine can do. I’ve played MANY of DICE’s BF games so I would say that I’m an experienced BF player. Without ever playing BF3, I knew what was coming. Battlefield 3 is like a 20oz uncooked ribeye steak marinating in the refrigerator. You know it’s going to be good, you know what to expect and you can’t wait to dive into it. Everything I imagined manifested itself today in DICE’s Battlefield 3 multiplayer demo. And now…my whole week is lalalalaed up. I can’t even concentrate on any other game, no matter how good, because my experience with BF3 keeps flashing before my eyes.

I entered into a closed area that had chairs and an LCD panel. One of the producers of the game gave us somewhat of a tutorial on how rush mode works and also explained each of the four classes. These are the same classes from BFBC2. They were medic, recon, engineer and support. I was smiling the whole time and eagerly waiting in anticipation to head into the next room to play. The map we were going to play was the streets of Paris. Holy lalalala was all I could mumble when he told us that. Paris was what was shown in the mp trailer just the other day and now I was going to be playing it with several other people for the first time.

As I left the first room I shook the DICE producer’s hand and said, “I love you and I love DICE and everything you have done.” My voice was sincere and endearing. I meant what I was saying. As I walked into the room I saw several PC setups with chairs and headsets. There were also cheat sheets at each station for those who didn’t know the controls. I put on my headset, got comfortable and waiting for the game to start. Although the PC version of battlefield supports 64 players, I think we were playing a 32 player game.

DICE restarted everyone’s client and those words of wonder popped up on the screen, “DEPLOY”. I did what every gamer does with a new FPS game, I tested the controls. I looked around at the beautiful photo realistic lighting and then that magic moment happened, I pulled the trigger. I had to fire the weapon before any encounters. I had to know what it felt like. It was like a cold glass of milk. It was silky smooth and the most accurate I’ve ever fired. I can only compare it to a 60fps game of counterstrike. It was that lalalalaing smooth. I pushed forward and started heading toward our first M-Com targets and the enemy was firing on us. I got a couple of quick kills and then got taken out. Even though we were playing Rush, I couldn’t spawn with my squad mates for some odd reason. This kept putting me all the way back to home base. No biggie, I didn’t care. I was playing Battlefield 3.

After taking out the first two M-Com’s, we pushed forward into a tunnel that led to the subway. We couldn’t get through because they were picking us off from the end of the tunnel and visibility was really low. The headsets we had were live and we could communicate with each other, but even with this tech being thrown at us, no one was talking once the game started. So I decided to ask for an Engineer. “Can we get an engineer to fire some rockets down the end of the tunnel?”. Right after I asked, we had already cleared it and pushed forward. I died and respawned in a subway train. We kept pushing further into the subway station then headed up an escalator to the main lobby of the station. We had to take out 2 more M-Coms to move on. They had us locked down so I switched from support to engineer and lit the place up. We cleared the M-Coms and headed to the doorway where we were once again pinned down. I called for a support class because I was out of rockets. They had tango’s across the street and on the second floor of the building to our left. “Can I get some ammo so I can take out the guys across the street?” Not two seconds after I asked for it, a support gunner asked me for my location. “Where are you?”, he yelled. I quickly responded, “I’m at the doorway and I need rockets!” He found me and responded again, “I left it on the floor to the left.” I turned to the left and there was my ammo. I reloaded and proceeded to unload rockets across the street and to the second floor of the building. We pushed forward, took out one of the M-Coms and were declared winners after I died moving to the second M-Com.

It was one of the most riveting PRE-ALPHA experiences I’ve ever had at E3. I was blown away. I got off my station and talked to the DICE team. I told them that I pre-ordered all 3 versions of the game. They were happy about that. I also told them that I love everything they do and October 25th couldn’t get here fast enough. I hung around a bit hoping to sneak another play through in but I had other meetings and another slot for Wed anyways.

Everything in this game from sound design to control is perfect so far. The micro destruction is REAL. There was cement, dust, glass and fire popping up everywhere. The screen was very busy and again, it looked REAL. The whole experience was somewhat surreal and everything happened so fast that I keep replaying it over and over again in my head.

Here’s a few things you should know about BF3. You are still limited to 4 player squads but I think they are expanding communication between all the other members. Don’t quote me on that yet though. The engineer class I played came standard with an M16 and the support class came with an LMG. It all makes sense. The maps on the console versions will be scaled down, but I’m sure you already knew this. There are now customizable dog tags. You can put images on them and also your kill count which dynamically updates on the tag.

Today was the first day of E3 and I finally got a chance to play Battlefield 3. It was utterly amazing and I think DICE has broken the fourth wall. There isn’t a shooter on the market that can touch BF3. Not one. Not Crysis 1, not MW3, Not any incarnation of Halo, nothing. DICE is now the king of the mountain and everyone else will be playing catch up for sometime to come. October 25th needs to get here now. I hope and pray for a MP beta on PC. I know people are still going to opt for MW3 instead of BF3. That’s fine because BF3 needs TEAM PLAYERS. If it seems like I’m hyping this game, well it’s true. I’m very biased at this point and no matter how you feel, I’ll be in the promised land on October 25th, 2011.

Didn't see commo rose and DICE refused to answer questions on commo rose.

I think you can still communicate by hitting the Q button like on BC2, I didn't pay attention to the mini map besides using it to see where the objectives were.

I didn't see 3D spotting in use. The only indicators you could see through walls were the objectives.

I was playing with relative noobs, so it's hard to gauge the teamplay with medics et. al. But of course there are incentives to heal teammates -- there's always been that in BF.

Didn't see any other vehicles being used by anyone, I spent most of my time in the tunnels and subway, where most of the action was concentrated.

Were you able to spin freely 360 degrees when prone without any stupid limitations?

Yes, you can do 360 while prone, I think, although it's gonna take a while.

You can't turn 360 if you're prone and have mounted your LMG -- you can only turn 90 degrees to left and right, anything more and you'll have to reposition your bi pod. This felt pretty realistic.
