Most Wanted’s career mode is the bread and butter of the game. You’ll start out in the present day, zip back to the past, and then work back to the present. Through a series of cheesy, 2 Fast 2 Furious-esque, live-action cutscenes you’ll interact with your girl, Mia, and the rest of the rival racers and cops. Real people are tinted in a sepia tone to blend in with the CG background and they speak directly to the screen a la old PC games like Wing Commander. I thought it was kind of ridiculous, but I suppose it’s more due to the macho man script than the design choice.

Basically, you’ve got a tricked out BMW and some jerk named Razor Callahan challenges you to a race where the loser gives up the pink slip to his car. Or course, Razor and his band of cronies sabotage your ride before the race to guarantee a loss. So the cops end up busting you since you don’t have a getaway car, and you’re left with nothing. Fortunately, you have a supportive and hot girlfriend who helps you get back on your feet. Mia hooks you up with a garage to store your rides and puts up the money for you to buy one of three startup cars: a Lexus, Fiat, or Chevy.

But you can’t just go after Razor right away. You’ll have to chase him from Rosewood to Camden Beach and finally to Rockport. He’s also at the top of the blacklist, a 15 racer hierarchy that newbies must work their way up. So does this mean that we’re stuck with just 15 races and it’s over? Heck no! You have to prove yourself to every member of the blacklist before they’ll accept your challenge. Street cred is earned through three distinct categories: Race Events, Milestones, and Bounty. The good part is that Most Wanted caters to both the free roaming addict and the linear gamer. You can either drive to all of the qualifying events or just access them directly from your safe house. Once it’s time to take on the blacklist racer, you’ll have to beat him in a series of races to truly win.

Race events come in six different varieties. Sprint is a quick race with no laps – just point A to point B. Circuit mode is a standard lapped race. Lap Knockout is a three-lap race where the last place racer is eliminated at the end of every lap. Tollbooth has you racing to several checkpoints within predetermined time limits. Speed Trap clocks your speed at several different points along the race and adds them all up at the end. Whoever has the most total miles per hour wins, so it’s conceivable to finish second or third and still win. Drag race is totally focused on shifting skills. You don’t necessarily have to steer, but you do flick the left analog stick to change lanes and dodge other cars. Hit the right analog stick up or down to shift, and watch for the perfect opportunity to hit your nitro.

Milestone challenges are centered in the free roaming mode and consist of all sorts of things, but they mostly focus on grabbing the cops’ attention, causing some mayhem, and then escaping scot-free. Perform a certain amount of infractions during a chase, earn a large bounty on your head, or inflate the cost to the state to enormous proportions to move on. Most of the time you can earn several milestones in one run and you’ll simultaneously boost up your required police bounty points in the process.

To get rid of the heat you can use all-new pursuit breakers against the po-po. Crash through water towers, gas stations, and donut shops to cut off the cops get them to stop and take care of the scene. A gauge on the bottom of the screen will tell you how close you are to evading or being busted by the cops. If you evade them for long enough, a cool down meter will slowly climb until you’ve completely lost them. To help the process it’s best to find one of the special hiding spots and wait it out until the police give up.

As you move through career mode the rivals will only get faster so you’ll have to choose between upgrading your current car or buying a new one. New cars will have better base attributes but you could beef up a Weinermobile to the point that it could take down a Porsche. There are over 30 cars in the game ranging from Volkswagens to Audis to Aston Martins. New cars and parts are unlocked after you beat blacklisters, but you still have to make sure you can afford them.

New parts are separated into cosmetic and performance categories. Performance parts will boost your three stats: handling, acceleration, and top speed. Upgrade your engine, transmission, suspension, nitrous boost, tires, brakes, and turbo with the ultimate goal of maxing everything out. Cosmetic mods include everything from paint jobs to decals to body kits to rims. You can totally change the look of your car, but I find it painful to blow cash on the look of my ride when I could be investing in its speed.

One way to save cash on expensive new vehicles is to go for your rival’s pink slip. After you take down a blacklister you get to choose from six mystery prizes. Three of them are some kind of special part upgrade and the other three offer you a chance to nab the loser’s ride. You get two picks so I found the best method was to try and win the car first, and if you happen to get it on the first try then go for the parts. This way you have a 66% chance of getting a very valuable vehicle.

Most Wanted’s secondary mode outside of the career section has you competing in a variety of the six different race modes with pre-set challenges, tracks, and cars. The 68 challenges will unlock gradually as you beat lower levels and offer you somewhat of a sneak peak at the beefier cars. I’m sure there will be some Xbox Live achievements tied to this, but it doesn’t seem like there are many unlockables along the way to keep you going.

Another mode, quick race, allows you to jump right into a race with no fuss. Hit quick play to just jump straight into a race where the computer chooses your car, race style, and track. In custom mode you can choose all of these options as long as you’ve unlocked them in the career mode. You can also play with a friend via split screen or over Xbox Live. Most of the online details aren’t completely clear at this point, but they look to be pretty standard fare.

After playing both current and next-gen versions of the game it’s safe to say that the 360 version looks pretty darn good. Lighting effects are more dynamic, cars look sharper, and the trees, buildings, and obstacles all have more detail and texture. But if you only play current-gen and never look at the 360 version I think you’ll still be very impressed with the look of the game. The graphics aren’t a huge jump, but it’s hard to deny that the 360 version isn’t at least decently more impressive.

Overall, I think players will get a kick out of the latest Need For Speed: Most Wanted's arcadey customization and will be pulled into the plot. I like that you’re trying to get back at someone instead of just trying to become “the best.” I also enjoy that the game always seems like there are at least five different things you can do in the career mode to progress instead of pushing you along a linear path. With all of this stuff to do, fans of the Need For Speed series will definitely get their money’s worth with Most Wanted.
