<``RyaN> And the last question is:

<``RyaN> <Nepean_guy> Could you give us a % of how much of the 2.3 patch is currently completed?

<Skippy> Using what measure? In terms of features, probably about 40% done. A lot of hard work awaits. I won't share how "done" in terms of release dates, though, because that'd be telling. 😉

<Skippy> I can do ONE more.

<Skippy> Smile

<AceKilla> So when is the next patch coming out?

<Skippy> I'm having too much fun to quit.

<AceKilla> ;-P

<Vet> When it is done😊

<Skippy> Your office is already packed, right?

<AceKilla> lol

<``RyaN> <AA|DaGeek> Do the s really delay the patch/update if we ask when it comes out?

<_Psychopod> My favorite was saying never when people would ask about 1.8.

<Skippy> DaGeek: I answered this in pre-chat! Smile Yes, we do. I just added another day to the schedule.

<RangeFinder> heh

<``RyaN> Skippy, do you have anything else you would like to add before we conclude this session?

<Skippy> Wow. I haven't had a chat like this in about four years. Three years. Last was a MP Design chat on Lum's site.

<Skippy> Either way, I'm having a blast. If my hands weren't numb from typing so much so fast, I'd keep going!

<Skippy> I think this is wonderful, and all the questions were great. Better than most of the answers, at least.

<Skippy> Sometimes I can't answer things fully, and others (like cheaters and hacking and stuff) I _won't_ answer.

<Skippy> Either way, I really appreciate you folks taking the time to be here.

<Skippy> Or read the log, whatevah!

<AceKilla> Nice interview Skippy, well...except for that 'You're Fired!' part
<Skippy> This is your game as much as it is ours, and we're doing all we can to make this the best game it can be.

<Skippy> Have a good night, and wish Ace luck in his future endeavors.

<Harmit> lol

<AceKilla> Nooooooo

<Skippy> Thank you!

<Vet> Does Skippy have Donald's hair style???

<``RyaN> I would like to thank Skippy for taking the time out of his busy schedule to stop in and answer some of the community’s questions and address some of the community’s concerns. Also thanks to everyone who submitted questions and for you all being here
<Dawg> thanks skippy

<AceKilla> yep, thanks to Ryan and the other AACM's for the great job!

<GhostfromTexas> thanks for coming skippy Smile

<The_General> On behalf of the beta team skippy, welcome to the wonderful world of AA.

IRC Interview wrote:

<``RyaN> There may be time at the end to ask some live questions from you all that attended. To help us out so that we are not keeping Skippy here all night I am going to ask you to pm Lady_Amethyst with your question. To do this type /msg Lady_Amethyst <enter your question here>.

<``RyaN> They will then pass the information along to us and at the end of the interview those community members picked will be given a chance to ask Skippy their question.

<``RyaN> And now let’s get on with the show and hear what Skippy has to say!.
<Skippy> Hi folks! I won't bore you with a long intro as my bio is on the web page, rally point.

<Skippy> I'm as excited to be here as you are (hopefully) to have me.

<Skippy> I'm also excited to be a member of the team. The newness hasn't worn off,
<Skippy> You're fired. Accept it.

<AceKilla> Doh!

<Harmit> <3
<Skippy> Anyway, I'm ready for the first question. Smile (In truth, I couldn't do with out Ace. He watches too much Apprentice, though.)

<Skippy> Very Happy

<Skippy> Done.
<``RyaN> Fury asks: What is your take on the games industry and why did you decide to change from making commercial games to working for America's Army?

<Skippy> Oh, dear.

<Skippy> The commercial game industry is ill.

<Skippy> In order to make money, most shops rely on getting more than they pay for.

<Skippy> This generally means long or unending crunches, meaning in most cases that entire seasons are canceled in order to make a delivery date that was unreasonable at best.

<Skippy> That said – and it’s an important factor in my decision to join – I was asked to introduce a reproducible process to the team development environment. I can do and have done that before.

<Skippy> Finally, the chance to contribute to something that’s truly greater than a normal game required to make a game cannot be ignored.

<Skippy> can do and have done that before.

<Skippy> Er, I can, that is.

<Skippy> Some of you may have seen the GamaSutra article on process written by my former boss Gordon Walton -

<Skippy> I was part of the team that produced that process, and was one of the people who maintained and updated the process once it was in place.

<Skippy> Not easy, but rewarding in that the teams that used that process got to enjoy the seasons as they passed by.<Skippy> Finally, the chance to contribute to something that’s truly greater than a normal game required to make a game cannot be ignored.

<Skippy> I get to be part of a team across the nation that’s saving lives in a very real sense.

<Skippy> If I can help that in any way, I can’t shirk that responsibility.

<Skippy> Done.
<``RyaN> Mitsumi asks: We all know that you are working extremely hard on the next patch. But most of us have to wonder, with all these great new additions to the outdoor aspect of this game is there any possibility that we will again get some new CQB maps?

<Skippy> Yes, Mitsumi.

<Skippy> In fact, our 2.3 maps are intended to be up close and personal. In our tests we’re getting into combat in under 5 seconds from spawn.

<Skippy> Ouch!

<Skippy> Since I’m rather , that’s really, really embarrassing for me to play test. Smile

<Skippy> Eh, done. Smile

<``RyaN> xStainDx asks What has changed within the Public Applications Team over the last 6 months? Why did so many of the Senior Developers leave? I've noticed a lot of changes within the team with people coming and going including you being our new Executive Producer.

<Skippy> That's a tough one, StainD.

<Skippy> There have been many changes, starting with a change in project leadership that culminated (I hope!) with my arrival to the team.
<``RyaN> Have any of these personnel changes delayed some of the upcoming releases of America's Army?

<Skippy> Yes, of course they have affected the America’s Army releases in the past six months and are affecting all future releases.

<Skippy> We’re scoping appropriately and finding alternatives when possible, such as contracting the work out or working with

<Skippy> America’s Army Government Applications (AAGA, Hi Vet!) to pick up the slack.

<Skippy> Building or rebuilding a team takes time, and then the new people have to come up to speed -

<Skippy> so we’re running later than we desired.

<Skippy> The team is making the conscious effort to rebuild stronger than before, though, and we don’t expect it to affect our long-term goal of bringing you a 3.0 version in 2006.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> sdwndr85 asks: Where do you see the current platform heading in the next few months? What is being done now to further enhance the game for future months to come? Where do you see AA heading in the next few months?

<Skippy> A version of AA running on UE2.5 (UT2K4 technology) is in the pipe.

<Skippy> In fact, our betas had a preliminary version a couple of weeks ago.

<Skippy> We’re doing this in the background with AAGA and some other folks, as well as our super-intern, Josh (JoMRey).

<Skippy> What is being done now? We’re working on 2.3, which features a bunch of tournament support features.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Zevets{SS} asks: Many people in the community feel isolated from the DEVs and the Beta testers. Are there any plans to increase community involvement, and if so what are they?

<Skippy> No; I'm going home now.

<Skippy> ;P

<Skippy> Yes. This IRC is an example of what we’re doing

<Skippy> .

<Skippy> Also my involvement in the forums and private messages.

<Skippy> the future we’ll develop features that support the community into the game itself.

<Skippy> Er, that integrate support for the community into the game itself.

<Skippy> I'm getting ahead of myself.

<Skippy> That’s a discussion best left for 3.0, however.

<Skippy> The details, at least, not the teasing.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> -==- scotyg asks: Will there ever be a map editor released for AA?

<Skippy> Yes.

<Skippy> Done.

<Skippy> Razz

<``RyaN> Quietus_Zero asks: Since there was a recent patch, is 2.3's release going to be pushed back?

<Skippy> Yes, by an almost corresponding amount of time between the release of 2.2 and 2.2.1 from what we originally intended.

<Skippy> More, in fact, because it always takes more time to clean up after a mess than it takes to make the mess.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Kirkazoid25 asks: How close are you to finishing Q-Course?

<Skippy> We have to finish 2.3 tournament mode features before we can work on 2.4 Q-Course features.

<Skippy> Things are changing dramatically enough around here that we can’t take the same approach that the team did in the past for making estimates.

<Skippy> That'll have to be good enough, Kirkazoid.

<Skippy> And I realize it's only a partial answer.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> The_Dao asks: Are there any plans to replace the "shot box" with something that relies more on skill then luck? Especially for snipers shooting no scoped with rifle in emergencies?

<Skippy> The plan is to have each weapon’s accuracy modeled using realistic data, and to otherwise allow the skill of the player to determine if he can shoot well.

<Skippy> If the weapon you’re firing is accurate, so will your shots be.

<Skippy> Done

<``RyaN> 3rdRecon asks: What are some of the new up coming maps going to be like?

<Skippy> Our 2.3 maps are all about getting players into action fast to support fast-moving tournament action. I’ll let the screen shots speak for themselves when they appear. Smile

<Skippy> One's urban, one's not. Both are a lot of fun, even for me.

<Skippy> The 2.4 maps take advantage of the new UT2K4 technology and some of the new features we’re working on,

<Skippy> like random spawn points (still only one spawn per mission as with all AA gameplay)

<Skippy> and random mission objectives so Assault and Defense cannot predict the best way to accomplish the mission.

<Skippy> Holy tension, Batman!

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Cpl L Williams asks: Will Non Special Forces maps be still Developed by the development team or will the game be purely focusing on Special Forces?

<Skippy> Yes, several of our new maps are not SF maps.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> NovaWolf101 asks: Could you please elaborate on the decision to remove the m9 pistols from Hospital?

<Skippy> Oi!

<Skippy> The decision consisted of: realism issues (no one uses the pistol as a primary weapon like we

<Skippy> were seeing), game balance issues, messaging issues (we don’t want to simulate activity that can

<Skippy> easily be duplicated on an American street), and control issues (it was a level design error to include it in

<Skippy> the first place).

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Nyers asks: How do you feel about the new or under development army-type games or just take it simple; what's your opinion? (Full Spectrum Warrior, First to Fight, Ghost Recon 2) Just a bit of the other side: http://interviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/942/Close-Combat-First-to-Fight-Interview/p2/ Considering the game's settings and features, a comparison with America's Army and THQ's Full Spectrum Warrior is inevitable. What would you say are the

<``RyaN> differences between these games and First to Fight? Peter Tamte: First to Fight is definitely different than both of these games. Full Spectrum Warrior is really a third-person real-time-strategy game, while

<``RyaN> First to Fight is 100% first-person shooter. With First to Fight, you'll get the authentic military team tactics of Full Spectrum Warrior, but you'll pursue your fight from the much more personal first-person perspective, where you're in the thick of firefights eliminating threats with your weapon.

<``RyaN> As for America's Army -- there are two critical differences. The first is that you lead a full fire team in First to Fight -- both in single player and multiplayer -- which makes the game play very differently than the "Rambo" style of America's Army. With First to Fight,

<``RyaN> you'll play the game much more strategically as you figure out how to use your team to overcome challenges. And, the second big difference is that First to Fight offers a full single-player campaign in addition to multiplayer.

<Skippy> Long Q, eh?

<Skippy> I personally think they’re wonderful. It’s important to note that no one beats AA’s authenticity - and, of course, AA is the _only_ official Army game.

<Skippy> With respec to authenticity,

<Skippy> respect, even

<Skippy> while the other developers get advice from retired personnel, AA spends time in the field and interviewing

<Skippy> active duty personnel, regular army and Special Forces. They modeled most of our animations, for example, not developers wishin' they were SF or even regular Army folks.

<Skippy> We aren’t also interested in one person’s

<Skippy> ability to control a squad through an arbitrary interface - we are interested in letting the most successful people be great because they know how to be part of a squad.

<Skippy> Big difference.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Neom asks: I know in version 2.3 we will be getting the new engine, but what engine will it be? ut2(ut2004)or ut2.X.

<Skippy> You know incorrectly. Version 2.3 continues to use the UE 2.0 (UT2K3) engine.

<Skippy> I realize there was the intent to

<Skippy> deliver on a new engine for 2.3, but plans changed about two and half months ago. Smile

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> D34DC3LL asks: Are there any details on when the new Unreal engine might be used?

<Skippy> In version 2.4 Q-Course, release date some time early next year. Those are all the details I'm givin' out. :

<Skippy> Smile

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> n4s7y asks: How will the America's Army Dev Team be helping the competitive community in the near future?

<Skippy> Our development effort for 2.3 focuses on tournament support features.

<Skippy> We'll publish a feature list some day... for now, understand that it supports admins and players alike

<Skippy> with cool features that make tournament configuration easy.

<Skippy> We're kickin' it tourney style, as some might say. (Ace.)

<Skippy> Done.

<AceKilla> HA!

<``RyaN> -=QRF=-KrazyMoFo! asks: Instead of spending a quarter to add new maps is it possible to just work on the current game and improve bugs, reduce cheaters, & work on game balance? Most of us like the maps we have and wish these issues could be addressed more.

<Skippy> We spend a great deal of development time working on bugs. We do not publicly discuss our plans for deterring cheating and griefers.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> {Gnome}....oG- asks: When can we get a good DemoRec system, like Fraps with the HUD and other things?

<Skippy> We’re looking at ways to address this in a version of the game to be released in the first half of 2005.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> At this time we will try to answer a few questions that have been passed onto Lady_Amethyst

<``RyaN> <GhostfromTexas> Question: With the impending implementation of the UT2K4 engine, are we to expect a drop or rise in the file size of the game?

<Skippy> As with any new release, we're including new maps. New maps generally means an increase in size. I can't say for sure at the moment.

<Skippy> I don't know if we're going to release on two CDs, and, of course, we'll have one large download for the full game.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> Ok guys for the live questions please pm Lady_Amethyst with your question to do this type /msg Lady_Amethyst <question u want asked>

<``RyaN> just a reminder Smile

<``RyaN> <snuffy> What is your, or the team's, favorite feature in the upcoming patch?

<Skippy> The "Skippy Wins" feature.

<Skippy> Lord knows I need the assist.

<_Psychopod> Random spawn points!

<Skippy> Yep. Smile

<Skippy> Coupled with Random Objectives, that should be a fine feature set.

<Skippy> Very little is left certain with respect to completing the mission. Where do you go to get the data? Who knows!

<Skippy> Where do you start? Ah, crud, it's in the place you least wanted to start... heh.

<Skippy> It should be fun!

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <-JSR-Scoopable{E}> I was wondering if AA might ever have a built in voicechat, in order to have better team paly, and to reduce the ammount of ghosting going on

<Skippy> We're very, very concerned about team paly. In fact, I bring up paly once or twice a day.

<Skippy> Heh, couldn't resist.

<Skippy> Yes, we'll have VOIP as part of the 2K4 engine technology.

<Skippy> The effect that has on game play is incredible. Of course, most of you know that already...

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <AA|jedispinge> give me the general direction aa is heading, such as strykers, and after that things that will be added and if there will be another graphical update, such as rangers getting RACKS and whatnot

<Skippy> What's a jedispinge, anyway?

<Skippy> OIC. Jedi Spinge.

<Skippy> AA is heading toward a game that includes features unlike any we've had so far.

<Skippy> It starts with Strykers and (probably) some bot AI to make for competitive-only multiplayer games, and ends with 3.0, a veritable

<Skippy> fundamental change in game play that supports player interaction in ways other than at the end of a gun barrel.

<Skippy> And yes, I'll get to Linux/Mac... it's coming. Smile

<Skippy> Graphics are likely to change most dramatically on 3.0, because that's when we intend to shift to Unreal Engine 3.

<``RyaN> <AA|(FIST)Pitbull> What type of vehicles are planned to be drivable?

<Skippy> Heh.

<Skippy> At the moment I believe the Stryker and Humvee. It's going to take some pretty careful game design to make that work, and, of course, that's subject to change.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <20:18> <Dedan> I know there have been alot of talking about M4A1 SOPMOd mod's, like flashlights and all, but will you add some mod's in some of the upcoming patches?

<Skippy> I'm pretty sure the answer to that is "no." Certainly not user-customizable ones, at any rate.

<Skippy> Done.

<Skippy> Oops.

<Skippy> Wait.

<Skippy> Not in the next 6 months, at least. Probably not after that, either, but one never knows.

<Skippy> Really Done.

<``RyaN> <Homey|AFK> What happened with the official stats-tracking-system that was announced a long time ago? Is it still under construction or are there any plans to support 3rd party tools (Like AAO-Tracker) with the stuff that they would need to create those stats you were talking about a long time ago and that are available in the server-stat logfiles?

<Skippy> Ask that one again in the next chat. We're doing some work in 2.4 related to stat tracking, but I'm pretty sure it's different from what was announced. Then again, I don't _know_ what was announced back then. Smile

<Skippy> I reserve the right to answer this later... I'm as yet ignorant of the details.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <Release_Linux> Can you address the Linux and Mac issues please???

<Skippy> One at a time.

<Skippy> First,

<Skippy> Let me say this is NOT a DEV issue.

<Skippy> Neither is.

<Skippy> We deliver the Windows client/server to others, and they create the Linux/Mac version.

<Skippy> Once it's out of our hands, we literally have no control over it. We don't have the team that's capable of modifying non-Windows versions.

<Skippy> So when I answer this, it's largely speculative AND is being done because I care about the community; it's a courtesy, not official.

<Skippy> Linux: We have a good-to-go on this one, as it's been essentially ready for a little while now. I truthfully don't know what the delay is. I know that we like to make sure it's tested well, and that probably had something to do with it.

<Skippy> Mac:

<Skippy> the issue is still open but we have no immediate plans to create the Mac version ourselves.

<Skippy> Better leave that as it is. I just deleted several libraries' worth of responses.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <wing-_-nut> Do you expect to continue releasing the linux and mac versions with the windows version? Will they be delayed or will support for the linux and mac versions be dropped entirely?

<Skippy> See above.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <COL_KNIGHT> <with the army changing there bdu to the new digital color will AA be changing as well?

<Skippy> (Not to be a smartypants, but the answers to those two were just posted.)

<Skippy> Since we are as authentic as humanly possible, and within the confines of the development schedule, we will have accurate uniforms when they change in the meat world.

<Skippy> It's going to take some time to make those changes and we don't know the full scope of them, but rest assured we will remain the most authentic game available. Smile

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <AA|branden1702> <A few beta servers have maps with XE in their name, are these the ones with random spawn points?>

<AceKilla> The maps with the XE at the end are older maps which we are experimenting with retrofitting in some of the new v2.4 features

<AceKilla> such as random spawn points, random objectives, and carryable objectives! Smile

<AceKilla> Done.

<``RyaN> <xStainDx> Q. Now that we know that 2.4 is Q-COURSE where does OVERMATCH fit into the Developement Cycle? 2.5? 2.6? or will it be the target of 3.0 in 2006

<Skippy> Overmatch will be 2.5 or 2.6. We have another release working more or less in paralell, though that's subject to change.

<Skippy> We're planning all of the 2.X releases in the next few months, perhaps I'll have an answer by the next chat.

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <HillBilly> What are the plans for returning previous nade loadouts to the maps and if so, are there any new "anti-nade spamming at spawn" measures planned?

<_Psychopod> random spawn points have proven to eliminate most nade spamming.

<Skippy> Each map is tuned for game play and game balance at the moment. As our betas - and

<Skippy> community posts show balance issues, we change them. And, of course, what Psychopod said. Smile

<Skippy> Done.

<``RyaN> <<57th-A>Maggoty> will there ever be mortar systems or any kind of indirect fire support included?

<Skippy> A caveat on my last answer:

<AceKilla> Each map will be evaluated for loadout adjustments in the updated engine release (v2.4)

<Skippy> We don't rely on posts as the only means by which we judge balance in "real" life game play.

<Skippy> We actually play the game a lot, just not using our DEV names. Well, I use my dev name because I like to let u know we're there.

<Skippy> And I don't mind being shot. Smile

<Skippy> OK, now to the question Ryan just posted:

<Skippy> Maybe. It's not planned.

<Skippy> Done. Smile

<``RyaN> <Marc> What is causing the critical error, and what steps are being taken to prevent it in the near futire?

<Skippy> The question really is WHICH critical error are you talking about? :/

<Skippy> Something happened recently. After 2.2 was released and it was clear we needed a more rigorous QA process on the DEV side,

<Skippy> we got approval to hire two new Quality Assurance folks to sit here, in our offices.

<Skippy> The two folks coming on are truly solid people, and they will complement the beta process perfectly.

<Skippy> One has 14 YEARS of quality assurance experience... the other "only" six, and he's a great functional tester.

<Skippy> That means the game will be tested thoroughly before the beta testers see it. Smile

<Skippy> We won't FIX everything before they see it, but we'll know the big issues. Smile

<Skippy> Needless to say, that affects our beta test organization a bit. More as we know how. Smile

<Skippy> Done.

ahh szal nincs fair play<#ejnye1>
