"Some of these configurations [become] strongly bound by deforming the system. In particular, new shell gaps appear by introducing a quadrapole distortion in the nuclear shape, where the ratio of the major to minor axis is 2 to 1. Such deformations play an important role in the process of spontaneous fission, where the 2 to 1 configuration is connected with the second minimum of the fission barrier."
