    C3's FREEMAIL service, started in October 1997, has 56,000 web and dial-up users. By 1999 the Freenet user base of over 100,000 was sold to the Hungarian PTT Matev, which continues to support and grow it. C3 is now a self-sustaining research and development labaratory sponsored by the companies and institutions that work with it to create innovative projects like digital public kiosks. The foundation continues to support projects through content related competitions.
