Dear TruckPol community,
We are now looking into the issues reported here on the board, and I must admit that the reports on steering sensitivity and braking problems are rather confusing for us. Many of you complain about steering, but unfortunately usually provide very few details of what specifically you find wrong with it and details about your controller. At the same time, there are several people who confirm that they find steering fine.
I would like to kindly ask you to help us identify the problems more clearly..
- The physics in the game has been totally redone since Across America. The current physics system has nothing in common with the old game. It is generally more responsive, especially at lower framerates. I remember that many people complained that they couldn't drive around corners well in Across America if their framerate was very low. This problem is definitely gone in PttM, the game responds to you trying to steer exactly the same regardless of framerate. Is it possible that the "too touchy steering sensitivity" reports come from users who were used to how things were difficult in AA for them, and now that things were actually corrected, they have hard time adjusting to the change?
- The "Steering Sensitivity" slider in the Options/Controls screen deserves an explanation. Most of you have come to the conclusion that the best thing to do is to take the slider all the way to the left. This may be a good idea with a joystick or a gamepad, but for a wheel, moving it to the right is actually a much better idea! The "sensitivity" for this slider is actually supposed to mean how quickly the wheels respond to the input from the controller, and while digital joysticks or gamepad buttons typically require some "smoothing" over time to avoid the controls being too jerky, the situation is quite different with a wheel, where you expect very responsive, immediate control. So possibly, the problem is actually a confusing name for the "steering sensitivity" slider causing most users to set it to a wrong position? Maybe if we rename this slider in a patch to something more descriptive, the confusion as well as the whole issue will be taken care of?
- Complaints about braking - we would also appreciate more input from a wider pool of people before touching the brakes. We felt that braking is actually quite balanced for a truck. Yes, you will not stop on a dime. But that is to be expected with a fully loaded truck, is it not? But we are suspecting that there may be a problem with braking using keyboard, with the brakes taking a little time to kick in after you press the brake key; maybe it's this delay that is causing the problems. and it's a keyboard specific problem unlike the steering sensitivity issue happening with wheels? Do you find braking with using wheel/pedals fine? If not, are you sure you have the combined/separate axis for acceleration and braking set up correctly in the game to match this setting in the wheel's drivers?
Please use this thread to tell us more about what you perceive as wrong with the steering and braking. Always listing your hardware configuration along with any issues reported would be very appreciated, and do not forget to mention the type of controller you are using for steering or braking.
Thanks a lot
