"An avatar is your representation in the world (a 3D person) these won't be in the first release, but will be in the second
(which is free and will be downloaded without you noticing it).
In the first release you won't be able to walk in the cities. A city will be accessible by a menu where you can do all the stuff you need to do. You won't see any avatars at all in the first release, not even your crew on the ship.
Once the 2nd release comes, you can walk around on the islands and in the cities and you will see your full crew working on your ship and boarding other ships."
