"The director of planning for Sega's AM2 division recently expressed, in a written statement on the AM2 website, his desire to continue the Shenmue series and to develop sequels to the top-selling franchise (calling one possible future project Shenmue III). Sega is extremely proud and supportive of the Shenmue franchise; however, this statement should be interpreted as interest from the developer to continue the series and not as an official announcement of Shenmue III or a continuation of the Shenmue series.
