"NEC Develops Programmable Parallel Processor Chip for In-Vehicle Video Image Recognition Applications
~ Features World's Highest Video Image Recognition Performance ~
SAN FRANCISCO, TOKYO, February 10, 2003 - NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY, FTSE: 6701q.l, TSE: 6701) today announced at the 2003 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) the successful development of an ultra-high-speed parallel processor single-chip solution that will enable development of real-time video image recognition applications in a high-level language. Video image recognition is expected to have a major impact on a wide number of applications including driver safety support systems currently evolving in the ITS (Note 1) field.
This new technology enables the world's first single-chip solution developed to perform the simultaneous and real time multiple processing of in-vehicle image recognition application equipment that is crucial for the development of driver safety support systems, which include lane departure, obstacle and overtaking vehicle warning systems.
NEC's new parallel processor chip achieves the required performance and programmability through the following innovations:
Integration of 128 single instruction multiple data (SIMD) processing elements (PEs) (Note 2) that operate on a low frequency of about 100-megahertz (MHz). With each PE co-operating simultaneously to process the target picture, NEC has achieved high-performance operation at a low-power-consumption rate and enabled extensive programmability through software application.
Use of a memory structure that enables independent access to each PE, facilitating efficient execution of parallel software programmed to simultaneously process a picture through a number of newly devised hardware structures (Note 3)
Development of a new architecture for image recognition processing that realizes a development environment based on an optimized C language (Note 4) compiler and increases software development efficiency.
With the development of these technologies, the peak processing performance has been improved by over 40 times as compared with NEC's conventional products to 51.2-giga operation per second (GOPS: one billion operations per second). Additionally, power-consumption has been reduced to less than 1/10 of that of highly efficient general-purpose processors in the 3GHz class. This achievement is equivalent to putting the total processing power of four of the latest model personal computers inside a personal digital assistant (PDA).
Demand is currently on the rise for image recognition technologies that can be used to extract the required information in real time from video information showing the natural surroundings in fields such as ITS, robot visual systems, and security monitoring. Computing equipment with a high performance is essential due to the sheer volume of data to be calculated in image recognition processing, but at the same time, the huge variety of objects and situations (Note 5) to be recognized requires that the computing equipment also has a high level of programmability. The environment is now such that, even though the performance of general-purpose processors and digital signal processors (DSPs) conventionally used for image recognition processing has been raised significantly, they still do not have sufficient performance, and other alternatives such as dedicated application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have a low level of programmability and thus require separate circuits for processing used exclusively in each different situation, lowering the usage efficiency of the circuitry in general.
Through extensive research and development aimed at solving these problems, NEC has now developed a parallel processor chip that realizes a high performance via single-chip integration of 128 SIMD PEs with a superior operating efficiency obtained by adding dedicated instructions while preserving a simple structure, and that facilitates development of parallel software by employing a memory configuration that enables independent access to each of the on-chip PEs. Moreover, by employing a hardware design that presumes use of compiler-generated code, this chip can provide a sufficiently high computing performance even when using a high-level language compiler, freeing up all the chip's parallel processing capabilities for use by high-level language users.
With this new development, NEC not only contributes to miniaturization of video image recognition processing equipment in the ITS field, but also accelerates the practical application of in-vehicle image recognition application equipment such as lane departure and obstacle warning systems, leading to a reduction in traffic accidents and fewer CO2 gas emissions through the elimination of traffic congestion.
NEC now plans to speed up research and development of this chip with the aim of improving its mass production capability and achieving commercialization within the next one to two years."
