Real Racing Club 0-Athletic Club 1: Just at the right time
Athletic Club were able to take home the three precious points after having beaten Real Racing Club by 0-1, goal scored by Urzaiz, during their visit to Santander. The team had the support of thousands of fans who had travelled all the way to Santander and our victory means the team can now breathe a little easier. It’s fair to say that the team held up well against a hometown crowd, who instead of cheering on their own team, were hell-bent on trying to harm the Athletic players.
On the other hand, the summary of what happened on field can be done easily. A weak first half without any significant goal-scoring opportunities with both teams calling for a penalty whilst in their opponent’s goal area. In Athletic’s case, Dañobeitia was brought down and in Racing’s case the ball came into contact with Athletic Club player Murillo´s hand. Both penalties went uncalled by the referee.
In the second half Racing took the initiative during the first twenty minutes. After which the match had evened out once more and in the dying stages of the encounter Urzaiz was able to finish off one of the few goal-scoring opportunities had by Athletic Club, which is one of the advantages of keeping the rivals score-less.
Following the half-time interval Urzaiz was sent in to replace Dañobeitia. Nevertheless, it was Racing who came onto the field with more determination to attack but they had to face an inspired Iñaki Lafuente. In the 51st minute Antoñito, who had just been sent in, took advantage of a well-rehearsed kick which was the result of a foul but the Athletic goalkeeper was able to send it to corner. Two minutes later, Serrano fired away from outside the goal area but the shot went way over the crossbar, in the 56th minute Lafuente was the winner of a one to one with Pinilla and, in minute 67 of the game Lafuente had to defend himself from a long shot at goal taken by Serrano and he did this by sending the ball to corner.
Expósito stepped in for Etxeberria in the 70th minute, which coincided with a significant change in the trend of the match. Preciado tried to put a little spark in his team’s play by sending in Casquero and Jonatan to replace Vitolo and Serrano. Nonetheless, all the goal-scoring opportunities were Red/White from that moment on. Amorebieta’s long-distance kick flew over the crossbar in the 76th minute and in the 85th, Urzaiz finished off a ball with his left after having taken advantage of the gap created by Aduriz. The goal was a cause for celebration among the rojiblanco fans.
The lack of confidence and the time it took to score the match-winning goal combined to make the suffering seem endless; the best goal-scoring opportunity of the game came when Orbaiz, who was facing an empty goal area, took a weak shot at goal that missed. This unfortunate incident was very similar to what happened to the player during last season’s match.
To make things worse, Prieto and Amorebieta got their fifth yellow card of the season and as a result won’t be able to play against Villarreal next Sunday. Despite this, an important step has been taken in our struggle to climb back up the league ladder and there are still 14 match days left in the competition. The team will never walk alone thanks to the support of our incredible fans, but at last we can say that the club has been able to take home the vital points just at the right time.

Ex- player Isidoro Urra has passed away
Isidoro Urra, Athletic Club player from the 1935-36 season to the 1945-46 season, passed away on Sunday, 19 February 2006 in his hometown of Santurtzi at the age of 89. His funeral will be held at the San Jorge Parish (Santurtzi) on Monday, 20 February at 19:00 hours. Athletic Club would like to offer their most heartfelt sympathies to his family.
Urra started his football career by playing for Santurtzi, a team which was part of the federation in the year 1932, and as a result of his achievements at Santurtzi he became an Athletic Club player in the 1934. His official debut came about, however, much later i.e. on 19 March 1936, during a league match that was played against Hércules at San Mamés and which was won by the Red/Whites by 5 goals to 3. The 1935-36 Championship League title was the first for Urra whilst at the Club.
Isidoro Urra was to become a heavyweight at Athletic Club after the civil war. The conflict having torn the team apart, Urra, who was only 23 at the time, was a veteran alongside Gorostiza, Oceja, Unamuno and Garate, to whom the young lions who had recently joined the club looked up to.
The post-war transition period finally came to an end in the 1940’s. In contrast, Athletic Club were triumphant during this decade: having won 1 League (1942-43) and 3 Copa (1943, 1944 and 1945), Championships and Urra played a big part in obtaining each of these titles.
After 96 League and 21 Copa matches played by the end of the 1945-46 season, he decided to move on. The latter part of his football career were spent in Donostia, as one of Real Sociedad’s leading players and Real were promoted to the First Division on two occasions during his time at the club.

Athletic Bilbao have won the Spanish title eight times but the focus of their attention this season has been on the other end of the table.
However, the Basques improved their chances of avoiding relegation with a 1-0 win at Racing Santander on Sunday.
Bilbao — who along with Barcelona and Real Madrid have been ever present in the Spanish first division since it started in 1928 — got three late points thanks to a left foot shot from Ismael Urzaiz five minutes from time.
Urzaiz’ effort from just inside the area levered Athletic out of the relegaion zone although there is little to choose between the bottom six teams.
Things went from bad to worse for Racing at the end of the game as they had defender Jose Moraton sent off in injury time.
Osasuna kept in contention for a Champions League spot and stay fourth with a useful
3-1 win at Cadiz.
Cadiz drew first blood when Lucas Lobos scored with a free kick after 14 minutes but Osasuna levelled from a Savo Milosevic header after 34 minutes and took the lead two minutes later when David Lopez scored from 20 metres out.
The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Alexander Medina was sent off 14 minutes from time and Raul Garcia wrapped up a successful night for Osasuna by getting the visitor’s third goal of the night two minutes from time.
Deportivo La Coruna lost ground on the places that will see them into Europe next season when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Zaragoza.
Diego Milito got his 12th goal of the season when he opened the scoring for Zaragoza from close range after 13 minutes but Pedro Munitis salvaged a point for Deportivo with a wonderful inswinging shot nine minutes after the break.
The former Spanish international was out wide on the right, outside the box and only a few metres off the touchline but his left foot shot outfoxed the Zaragoza defence.
League leaders Barcelona bounced back after two successive defeats and inflicted a 5-1 thrashing upon struggling Real Betis on Saturday.
Barca’s goals were all orchestrated by Ronaldinho — and he got one of his own for his 13th of the campaign — as he returned from suspension although two were credited as own goals to the unfortunate Betis defender Melli Andreu.
Henrik Larsson and Lionel Messi got Barca’s first and last goals with Joaquin Sanchez getting a late consolation for Betis when they were already 4-0 down.
“We had the advantage of playing at home and made the most of every opportunity. But you have seen an entertaining game of football with both sides willing to attack,” commented Barca coach Frank Rijkaard.
Real Madrid celebtrated the return of club captain Raul Gonzalez, after three months on the sidelines with a knee injury, by notching up their sixth successive league victory with a comfortable 3-0 win over Alaves on Saturday.
The 29-times Spanish champions virtually killed the game as a contest when they scored twice in the opening 11 minutes. Stand-in captain Jose Mari ‘Guti’ Gutierrez rifled the ball home from outside the box in the sixth minute after Robinho had passed back to him and then the skipper turned provider five minutes later.
He delivered a delightful chip over the Alaves defence to find the muscular Julio Baptista who headed the ball up and then proceeded to connect with an overhead kick.
The ‘keeper was soundly beaten but the ball came back off the post only for it to fall to Robinho and the young Brazilian made no mistake.
Cicinho added Real’s third 12 minutes from time. (AFP)
