VERONA, October 22 (Serie A) - Winless Cagliari will be hoping this is the week their Serie A campaign finally gets off the ground as they prepare for the trip to Chievo.
Few Rossoblu fans could have expected their team to have had such a poor start to the campaign having shown in the past two seasons what a competitive side they were.
The retirement of club captain Gianfranco Zola in the summer has left a big void for a team that finished a respectable 10th position last term and who gained promotion to the top flight the previous year.
``I would be a liar if I said that Zola's departure has not affected us,'' said club owner Massimo Cellino. ``But life goes one.''
Four defeats and three draws in seven games has condemned Cagliari to 19th position in the standings, just one point clear of bottom side Treviso.
To make matters worse, last weekend's 2-0 slip against AC Milan brought to an end Cagliari's one year unbeaten run at the Sant Elia and with the team's last victory on the road dating back to November 2004, things can only get better.
Morale is low in Davide Ballardini's squad and Cellino is well aware of it.
``This season we are paying for our achievements taken in the last two years,'' he said.
``It is as though we have given up after all we have done and that cannot happen.''
For such reason, Cellino has been present in Cagliari's training sessions this week hoping to lift the spirits of a team in desperate need of a confidence boost.
A victory could well turn around the Sardinians' negative campaign but they will have to show a major improvement if they wish to beat ninth-placed Chievo.
The men from Verona are also looking for a win having drawn their last two games against Treviso and Palermo.
But unlike Cagliari, Beppe Pillon's side have only lost two games this season, against Internazionale and Juventus.
Pillon's only concern is his team's failure to take advantage of their opportunities in front of goal.
``We should learn to kill the game off early on,'' said the Chievo coach.
``But my team is showing determination and that is important, let's hope we approach the game against Cagliari in the same manner.''
Ballardini will make an important change in his starting line-up with reserve goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo set to replace Uruguay international Fabian Carini, who has made several major errors in recent games.
The good news for the visitors is the recovery of midfielder Daniele Conti, who returns to the starting line-up.
Hosts Chievo will be without striker Federico Cossatto, who picked up a knock during training and will be replaced by Simone Tiribocchi. -
