Livorno v Chievo Verona: Preview

LEGHORN, November 25 (Serie A) - Livorno will be battling to defend their fifth place in the Serie A standings when they host Chievo on Saturday.
The game on Tuscan soil is set to be a tense affair with the Amaranto club just one point clear of their opponents from Verona.
The hosts go into the game in confident mood following last weekend's 2-0 triumph against neighbours Empoli which saw Roberto Donadoni's side climb into a UEFA Cup place.
And the optimism in Leghorn is justified with the Amaranto club yet to be beaten at home, having taken 16 of a possible 18 points at the Armando Picchi stadium.
Few could have anticipated that after 12 games played, Livorno would hold such an elevated position in the standings as they are just two points behind fourth-placed Internazionale.
But while the Livorno fans begin to dream of their team playing in Europe next season, coach Donadoni has been quick to remind them his players still have a lot of work to do before the end of the campaign.
``I don't want to be a party pooper but we still have to understand what our defects are,'' said Donadoni.
``We are getting many points at home but very few on the road.''
Indeed if Livorno could re-produce their home form on their travels they would undoubtedly be fighting for the Scudetto alongside leaders Juventus.
Donadoni's men have only conceded one goal in their six home games so far this season while finding their opponents' net nine times.
However their away form tells another story having conceded 12 goals and only netted four times in their six matches on the road.
Visitors Chievo have been a more balanced side and the fact they are unbeaten in their last eight games should serve as a warning for the hosts.
Beppe Pillon's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Ascoli last weekend, a result which may have disappointed the fans but not the coach.
``For a team like Chievo whose aim is to defend its Serie A status as early as possible, this is a positive result and it's an important sign,'' said Pillon.
The Gialloblu, who have taken 20 points and lost just twice this season, will be looking to clinch their seventh win of the campaign, which would be a big morale boost in view of next weekend's big game against AC Milan.
Livorno will be without striker Raffaele Palladino who has failed to recover from injury, while Chievo welcome back forward Federico Cossato from suspension.
Both sides are already halfway to the figure of 40 points which in Italy is usually enough to guarantee survival in the top flight. -
