Pressure. This has been the talking point in both PES and FIFA. The game developers have always used ‘pressure’ as the trump card. Building up the AI pressure is surely one lazy way to make the game more difficult. If you notice, in less difficulty levels, there is less pressure and higher difficulty levels there is more pressure. In real life, the team at the top and the team at the bottom are not their places because of their ability to pressure. It’s not like Chelsea is applies most pressure in the premier and West Ham applies least pressure.
In order to make the game more difficult, the football games are built in such a way that the AI opponent pressures all the time and all over the pitch. This is at its worst in FIFA games. In PES it’s not so bad but it’s certainly there. In game style for each team, there is a slider for pressure. The game help menu says ‘pressing’ is about how tightly players will pressure an opposition player on the ball. 0-6 is loose. 7-13 is medium. 15-20 is tight.
For most top teams, this is set between 11 and 13. So this is high medium. This means the opponent players will pressurise you even when you’re in the midfield in your half. While this certainly makes the game more difficult in the midfield, this is a bit unrealistic. For 90 minutes, no team can keep doing this. In real football, the midfield battles are by closing down spaces and cutting down options. With high-medium and high pressure, the opponent AI never does this. That’s because, when you have the ball, their first course of action is to pressure the ball carrier. This also means hurried one touch passes just to keep possession or even worse, committing yourself into an attack without really planning for it properly.
Hence my suggestion to reduce the pressure value of the teams to say, 8 points. This is the low medium zone for this slider. With this what happens is, the AI opponent doesn’t mad charge at your players. It occupies its positions on the pitch and tries to close down spaces and defend as they would in real football. Now, don’t presume that this would make an easy game. It wouldn’t. You would get more time on the ball for sure. You can play a more considered game. At the same time, creating chances won’t be so easy. You really have to play good football to create chances or beat the opponent.
I haven’t yet tested with pressure slider at less than 8 yet. I want to see how a team plays when the pressure slider is set at, say 2 points. I will try that report back here. I’m sure that would also work out well because even in real life, you have teams that just suck up all the attacks all the time, especially when they play top teams.
Important point: I play at -2 gamespeed. Some people tend to think that this is painfully slow. It is not. This is the speed that closely resembles the pace of the real football. With my obsession towards making the game as realistic as possible, I don’t want to play at any speed other than -2. With the gamespeed set at -2 and pressure set at 8 points, this game is just incredible.
Lövésnél dettó, bár ott az R2vel belsõvel rúgja, ott inkább csavarodik.
Én azt szeretem, amikor belsõvel kifelé pörög és csavarodik a labda, mintha gumilabdát lõne az ember. 😄
Konami’s definition of ‘Player Support’ slider is here: “Choose the awareness level of players positioned around the man in possession. High: Offensive. Low: Defensive”. By this definition, you might set for teams like Chelsea, Barca, Man Utd and Madrid a max value of 20, while the ‘men behind ball’ teams might get low single digits. At a value of 20 for player support for, say, Barca you’ll find the game totally unrealistic.
That’s because the description from Konami for this slider is completely incorrect. I don’t know if that’s translation mistake or whatever – the description is wrong. This slider is all about the pace of the build up of attacks. The player support support slider has a massive role in determining how the game moves. This slider determines the pace of the game. Set at 20, you have teams running all the time at impossible speeds for all 90 minutes. Every time your team wins the possession, players will start running ahead of the ball carrier.
This means two things: (a) the game playing at an unrealistic speed and tempo all the time (b) the teams losing shape and becoming more vulnerable. The teams with low values for ‘player support’ are the ones that build up their attack slowly and make the best use of the skilled players in the team. Teams with lower values for player support would be more solid and play more considered football. If your team does not have the skilful players you can have high player support values but that would mean you’re vulnerable and that you’re players could be very low on stamina by the 70th minute or so.
For a slow build-up team I’d set a value between 0-6, and for a fast build-up team, I’d set it between 7 and 10. I would not use the values beyond 10 for any teams.
In a way, this ‘player support’ slider very identical to the ‘pressure’ slider. The ‘player support’ slider does to your players on the ball what the ‘pressure’ slider does to your players off the ball. For both these sliders, ideally the scale should have stopped at 10 or 12 as the maximum. If you play with both teams’ pressure and player support set at 20, what you’ll see is a comic and fake representation – one that keeps reminding you that you’re playing just a videogame. It is at the lower values for pressure and player support, you get a feeling that you’re playing football.
As I’ve mentioned before, I play only 15 or 20 minute matches and I always play at -2 gamespeed. I strongly suggest you to play 20 minute matches at -2 gamespeed, with pressure and player support values brought down to realistic levels. It’s a pity that Konami has not explained their beautiful game well enough but worry not, as always, the PES community will make up for that gap. Please do experiment these suggestions and post back your views and opinions. Cheers!
