Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, I put you in the ground.
Report: Cantinelle
The luring of monsters has become a real problem in Tibia, in both PvP and non-PvP worlds. In this article, I will be discussing the problem from the standpoint of non-PvP, specifically Calmera, though the problem exists in various levels of severity in every world.
There are many places where creatures are lured to cause havoc and death: elf arcanists in Ab'Dendriel, dwarf guards in the Kaz mines and in Edron, various monsters to the amazon camp, cyclops and mino guards to Thais... all a problem, but I'd like to address what I think of as the area of the most lures.
The biggest problem is the area of the map that has come to be known as "Lurer's Plain"; specifically the large open fields bordered by the "anti-GS" bridge and Mt. Sternum on the west, the Dwarf Bridge on the north, the entrance to Venore on the east and the desert and Wolf Tower to the south. In order to travel most anywhere on the mainland map by foot (except between Carlin, Ab'Dendriel, and Kazordoon), you must go through this area.
It takes only a few minutes to pass through the plain, but for many, especially of a lower level, those are minutes of dread and potential terror. Day and night, the question is asked in Game-chat and the Help channel: "GS lured?" It's a difficult question to answer, because the situation can change from peaceful to chaos in a matter of minutes. Also ... it's not just the dreaded giant spider that is lured to attack the innocent; it's also hunters from north of Mt. Sternum, as well as dragon lords from deep in the Plains of Havoc. Seeing these enemies so far from their usual hunting grounds is often disorienting, especially to lower level players, who are used to passing through facing nothing stronger than a wolf. A new target of lurers is the post office, which sits on the path from Thais to the dwarf bridge, approximately half way between the two. The unwary traveler of that route may have multiple lures waiting for him, giant spiders and hunters, with little hope of escaping either. The lurers themselves take refuge upstairs in the post office, waiting for the opportunity to loot their victims.

Why do they lure? There are many reasons: greed, anger, revenge ... boredom. I put the question to a former lurer, who agreed to speak openly under promise of anonymity. "My first lure was an accident. I was running from a cyclops and it followed me all the way to Thais. As I entered town, people started to run from it, yelling, and all of a sudden I felt very powerful. After that, I did it a lot. Sometimes I'd kill the cyc myself in town and blame someone else for the lure ... people saw me kill the cyc and didn't suspect it was me, but then I needed to bring more and got known as a lurer. That was fun, too, because people in town would ask me to bring them in for excitement. When the elf and minotaur spawns were added after an update, I started luring scouts and guards. That was funny, because at first people just thought they were summons until they started getting attacked. I was sorry I missed the time when GS could be lured into Thais... that must have been cool to be able to do. I never got caught, but after a while I saw it was hurting people that never did anything to me, and it wasn't really fun anymore."
What can be done? Can we completely stop the lurers? Sadly, the answer is no; a certain amount of chaos is inevitable. However, I think if we work together, perhaps we can help protect the people who use "Lurer's Plain" to travel across Tibia. There are community-minded people even now working on the problem on their own.
One Thais-based guild, the Defiance, has offered an escort service. For a fee, their guild members will escort travelers through the plain, using the gold from fees to keep themselves supplied with runes. The service has been both applauded as a strike at lurers and decried as extortion, but the idea is a positive one. The guildleader, Danny Diehard, has to be given credit.

Other guilds try to fight the lurers themselves. Jovial Sage, a vice-leader of my own guild, Grand Designs (also based in Thais), often patrols Lurer's Plain, scrambling other guild members when a lure is spotted to come and help kill. One night recently, Jovial Sage and I were killing lures, but as we worked, a regiment of sorts assembled itself around us. The group consisted of travelers with some time to devote to fighting lurers. They were from all over the map, all levels and vocations ... some friends and some complete strangers, just there to help. The group numbered about a dozen, and with a patrol being walked, the lurers faded away like thieves in the night. However, we couldn't stand guard forever, and when our little band of fighters broke up, the lures started up again. Two of our number died traveling the route from Thais to Kazordoon. Very frustrating, but proof that there really is safety in numbers.

Secura's blacklist has not been able to be adapted to fit Calmera, but refusing to deal with known lurers would be a good start. In the Carlin depot, I confronted the player whose lure Jovial Sage and I had killed the night before, selling various items. When I asked him if that was stuff he'd looted from people he'd killed luring, he changed his sales cry to, "BLUE ROBE FOR SALE ... FRESH OFF A CORPSE!", while laughing at me. Needless to say, I didn't share the humor.
If players refuse to deal with known lurers, thieves, and looters, would that work for other servers as it has on Secura? I don't know; every server has its own personality, so what works well on one may be disaster on another. Perhaps things can only be controlled on a certain level. Maintaining a blacklist takes time and dedication.
But on a personal level ... if you know someone is a lurer, do you really want to buy that equipment from him? If you're the one who was killed and looted, do you want to see them profit from your death? If you're a druid, do you care that the backpack of Ultimate Healing runes that player is buying will likely be used to keep a lured creature alive to kill innocent players, maybe even you? Perhaps the power lies in each of us individually to stop the lures. If we put our heads together, maybe we can find a workable solution.
I know I'm willing to work at it ... are you?

Thou art a very pleasant little rabbit.

Catti: 85
Sai: 73
Cipi: 52
Krapi: 181
