A bejelentés azután következett be, hogy a projekt mintegy 800 meghatározó résztvevõje petíciót nyújtott be a SETI@home adminisztrátoraihoz a renitensek megzabolázása érdekében. A petíciót Max Nealon veterán Seti@Home "munkatárs" indította, amikor a hamis adatok számának jelentõs emelkedését tapasztalta.
Nealon szerint a csalás egyre terjedõ mértéke lassan akár a támogatók szemében is ronthatja a projekt megítélését, a statisztikai adatok ugyanis tévesek lehetnek, s jelentõsen erõsebbnek mutatják be a projekt mögött álló erõt, számítási kapacitást, mint amilyen az valójában.
"Amikor a szponzoroknak 4 millió felhasználóról -- 200.000 aktív, akik közül 4.000 nyújtja az összes teljesítmény több mint 90%-át -- beszélnek, túlbecsülik a valós teljesítményt" -- mondta Nealon.
Szerencsére a projekt kialakítása miatt a tudományos eredményekben a csalás nem okoz torzulást, nem okoz problémát, csak a csapatok eredményeiben és így a ranglistákban látszódik a visszaélések eredménye.
A Seti@Home egyelõre türelmet kér az önkéntesektõl, s arra kéri a segíteni szándékozókat, hogy mûködjenek együtt a SETI@home következõ verziójának, a "Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing" (BOINC) kliens elkészítésében. A BOINC ugyanis teljesen nyílt forráskódú szoftver lesz, így a vállalkozó kedvû programozók feltehetõleg elõbb-utóbb teljesen kizárhajták a csalás lehetõségét.
