ROME, December 21 (Serie A) - Francesco Totti struck twice against 10-man Chievo to help Roma end their dismal run at the Stadio Olimpico in style on Wednesday.
Totti opened the scoring in the 30th minute from the penalty spot before netting his second eight minutes later.
Simone Perrota added Roma's third with a stunning strike in the 64th minute before Rodrigo Taddei capped a wonderful night for the home fans five minutes from time.
Chievo were forced to play the last 37 minutes with a numerical disadvantage after defender Lorenzo D'Anna was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The win, Roma's first league victory at home since October 30, has placed the Giallorossi in eighth position in the standings, level on points with city neighbours Lazio.
Beppe Pillon's men failed to convert the numerous chances they created in the opening half and they were made to pay with Roma proving more deadly after the re-start.
Chievo, who were guaranteed to end 2005 in sixth position having only lost three times this season prior to tonight, showed plenty of determination from the off.
Franco Semioli had the first opportunity of the game but his effort proved an easy catch for Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni.
Doni was called into the action again shortly after, with Sergio Pellissier's shot forcing the keeper to dive to his right.
But just when the visitors were playing at their best they suffered a setback on the half-hour mark.
The referee pointed to the penalty spot after Chievo goalkeeper Lorenzo Squizzi had brought down Damiano Tommasi inside the area.
Television replays later showed Squizzi had touched the ball before clashing with Tommasi.
Totti made no mistake with a powerful strike towards the left post which beat Squizzi.
Chievo had little time to recover before Totti struck again.
A cross from Philippe Mexes found Totti, who surged towards the area and fired a powerful long-distance strike into the far corner.
Simone Tiribocchi could have reduced the arrears shortly after the re-start but his powerful header went wide of Doni's right post.
Chievo hopes were effectively ended when D'Anna was sent off for a heavy tackle on Perrotta with 53 minutes played.
Pillon made a double substitution with Amauri and Giuseppe Scurto replacing Tiribocchi and Pellissier.
But the double substitution did little to inspire Chievo, who were at the mercy of their rivals.
Shortly after the hour mark, Perrota's strike from 20 yards surprised Squizzi who was forced to concede his third.
With 10 minutes remaining, Semioli came close to getting one back but his right-footed effort was saved by the impressive Doni.
Taddei made sure Roma finished on a high five minutes from time after latching onto Houssine Kharja's cross from the right to fire past Squizzi. -
