Sonny Rollins - Rollins Plays For Bird (1956)MP3 | 320kbps | Covers | RS.com | 91mb | 5% File RecoveryGenre: Jazz
Sonny’s homage to the (then) recently deceased Charlie Parker opens with a quote from the famous opening to ‘Parker’s Mood’, a medley of tunes from the great man’s Verve days and swings in a relaxed fashion with a band including Kenny Dorham and Max Roach, former associates of Bird. One of Rollins’ most laid back and enjoyable records.
“Rollins Plays for Bird” is vintage Sonny Rollins — an album with the perfect combination of medium tempo hard boppers and scintillating ballads. But unlike other recordings you get them here all in one song. “The Bird Medley” features seven different Charlie Parker songs, all strung together intelligently by the band of Sonny, Kenny Dorham, Wade Legge, George Morrow and Max Roach. While the medley is album’s focal point there are two other tracks, the eloquent ballad “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face” and “Kids Know,” featuring terrific horn interplay by Sonny and Dorham.
Allmusic.com:
Sonny Rollins, heard in his early prime, performs “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face,” “Kids Know,” and a seven-song “Bird Medley” on this CD reissue of a 1956 Prestige LP. Actually, Rollins is only on four of the tunes in the medley and not all of the songs have a close connection with Charlie Parker. Featured in a quintet with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Wade Legge, bassist George Morrow and drummer Max Roach, Rollins is in fine form although the hard bop music falls slightly short of being essential.
www.platekompaniet.no:
Recorded in 1956, the year after Charlie Parker’s death, ROLLINS PLAYS FOR BIRD consists primarily of a seven-song medley of tunes associated with Bird’s post-1950 period. In the course of referencing this repertoire, Rollins succeeds in paying tribute to a great artist without descending into mere mockery. Bird’s playing was the definition of bebop phrasing and Rollins has moments here that are clearly quotations of the altoist’s rhythmic sensibilities. This is a carefully titled album, however: it’s not Rollins Plays Bird, but Rollins Plays ‘For’ Bird. Anyone who wants reassurances of authenticity need only look to the sidemen credits. Trumpeter Kenny Dorham was on many of Bird’s own recordings, as was drummer Max Roach. Pianist Wade Legge and bassist George Morrow, while not Parker alumni, were working with Rollins, Roach and Dorham in the Max Roach Quintet at the time of this session. I’ve Grown Accustomed To Your Face is a ballad feature for Rollins, while his original Kids Know, a cooking quintet tune in 3/4, provides conclusive proof that the tenorist was in full possession of his own voice on this date.
Personnel:
Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone);
Kenny Dorham (trumpet);
Wade Legge (piano);
George Morrow (bass);
Max Roach (drums)
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on October 5, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7095). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1986, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Tracks:
1. Bird Medley: I Remember You / Star Eyes / My Melancholy Baby / They Can’t Take That Away From Me / Old Folks / Just Friends / My Little Suede Shoes (26:55)
2. Kids Know — Sonny Rollins (11:39)
3. I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face — Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe (4:52)

Én az alsót használom futam alatt (Launch in new window (large)).

Fülcsi köszi a koktélt, átbogarásztam a címeket. Benne van 5-6 kedvencem nekem is (The night (Johnny M5), Woodoo dance (Stage), I follow you (Airbus), Keep on music (Danny Keith) és a Hold me tight (Night Society).
Johnny-nak viszont több száma is fantasztikus.
Computerman (Puhdys)

Köszönöm szépen õket addig is.
#63867

Kérésedre feltettem a Mustafát újra:

Leszedted végül a vasárnapi koktélomat ? A többi dalát is megnéztem a youtobe-on, nekem azok is tetszenek. Érdemes lenne tõle albumot is szerezni.A Ceasar My Black Lady-jét is imádom, engem Chris Norman stílusára emlékeztet, fõleg azokra a dalokra, amiket Bohlen írt neki.

Tetszik nekem is a 6 perces Lady. Köszönet érte!<#worship>

Fülcsi ma meghallgattam a Ricky Kingeket és a B. Darin-t.

Köszi a Charlotte-t! Tényleg marha jó zene.<#eljen>
Kolléga, én kiváncsi lennék a Ceasar-ra. Olyan ismerõs, de nem tudom hova tenni. Feltennéd, egyenlõre csak az original verziót?
